The Study of Gender in The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
Abstract:
My research examines the gender spaces, roles, and experiences in this novel. It was a pivotal moment when this book was published as Hemingway’s first in the roaring 20s. I analyzed the way he blurred the lines of gender, gendered certain spaces and emotions, and how the characters defied this. This novel depicts the struggles of finding meaningful relationships while dealing with and navigating trauma that is linked with how the characters perform and experience gender. I discuss what aspects of the book get to be determined as gendered, and why.
