How Should People Face Discriminatory Justice? Examining the Role of Growth Mindsets and Intent

Abstract:

When someone discriminates against someone else, what should the consequence of their behavior be? We examine how belief systems influence the type of consequences people endorse for perpetrators of discrimination. Across three studies, we predict and find that intent and growth mindsets of racial bias positively predict endorsements of restorative justice. However, perceiving greater levels of intent predicted more support for retributive consequences, whereas greater endorsement of growth mindsets predicted less support for retributive consequences.
