“Happy Pills” : The Truth About the Corrupt Mental Health Industry

Abstract:

This presentation will address the ways that the pharmaceutical industry profits off of the trauma and mental health of individuals. Specifically, I explore the concerning relationship that exists between Big Pharma, the Food and Drug Administration, the American Psychiatric Association, and doctors themselves. The corrupt history regarding the publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is highlighted in my research. Since this is the standardized tool to diagnose and treat mental illness, it is critical that conflicts of interest are not playing a role in suggested treatments. Additionally, bias in psychiatric diagnosis is an important issue that is explored to determine the social injustices present in mental healthcare. Especially after the pandemic at a time in which antidepressant, benzodiazepine, and antipsychotic prescriptions are at an all time high, it is important that patients have access to effective treatments and have the ability to make proper informed consent. Solutions to correct these injustices are offered which include personalized psychiatry, federal regulations, and a holistic approach to patient care. The advantages and disadvantages of the biological/disease model as well as the humanistic model of psychiatry are examined.
