Abstract:

My project focuses on Lady Brett Ashley from The Sun Also Rises, and the internal issues she suffers from. I focus on the multiple attributes to Brett’s personality and why she comes off as the character she does, especially to the men of the novel. As the prominent female character of the novel, I want to focus on Brett’s various difficulties that I have discovered throughout my research. I am focusing on Brett’s mental health/trauma, her flirtatious nature with the men, and her mothering attitude toward the men. The articles I have gathered throughout my research help me emphasize how Brett has been deemed a “destructive” female character as well as emphasize my idea about her being lost in this post war-world.
