Finding Freedom Behind Bars: The Power of Islamic Faith for Incarcerated Men
Abstract:
During my presentation, I will be discussing the phenomenon of men who become more religious after being incarcerated, particularly in relation to Islam. This trend has been observed and I will present statistics and reasons for this increase in religious activity, which is often related to the traumatic experiences endured while in prison. Furthermore, I will explore the impact of incarceration on religious beliefs and practices, as well as the relationship between trauma and religious transformation. A significant number of prisoners experience trauma, and I will examine the role of religion in coping with this trauma. One aspect that I will delve into is the appeal of Islam to incarcerated men, as well as the role played by prison chaplains and other religious volunteers in promoting Islam. This will include an exploration of the challenges involved in practicing Islam within a prison setting. Finally, I will explain why it is important to understand this phenomenon, particularly in terms of its potential impact on prisoner rehabilitation and reintegration into society. By examining the factors that contribute to an increase in religious activity among incarcerated men, we can gain a better understanding of how to support and facilitate their transition back into the community.
