Gender in Comedy: Why do women have it harder in the field?

Abstract:

Comedy, whether it is in the form of stand-up, television, or other media, is a trademark of the modern day entertainment industry. Though there are roots reaching back to the days of Ancient Greece, through streaming platforms and dive bars alike comedy has never had as many points of access for consumers as it does today. However, when people think of comedians, the names that come to mind are typically those of men. Prominent figures like Robin Williams, Jerry Seinfeld, and George Carlin are some of the trailblazers that people immediately think of when comedy enters one’s mind. This is not an accident, but rather entrenched in powerful patriarchal views. Due to the antiquated belief that women do not possess the boldness and laid-back demeanor required to be funny, the field of comedy is less accepting of women than men.
