How Media has affected college Athletes; Textual Analysis

Abstract:

Student-Athletes are expected to have good grades, attend long practices and strenuous lifts, have to be able to keep their body healthy with treatments and recovery while balancing a social life, they are held to a higher standard. Now athletes are being compensated through the new NIL deals that are being offered and are being used by those who have influence. Studies show that “Division I student-athletes in the 2019 NCAA survey reported a mean time of 33 hours a week spent on athletics. Which means that some student-athletes are working the equivalent of a full-time job in addition to going to college.”(Tracy Markel, Digital Media). Before this new NIL era, athletes in college would have little to no time to get a job because all their time is going towards sports. This helps athletes be able to earn money while focusing on their craft. I used Rhetorical Analysis to evaluate a famous athlete who plays on the Uconn Women’s Basketball team Paige Beckers’s Instagram and she is thriving off this new deal. She has benefited from this new NIL way by having a coauthor of sponsorships which include Crocs, StockX, Chegg, and more.
