Mental health of police officers & lack of public support

Abstract:

This research examines the effects of hate rhetoric and defunding police initiatives on the mental health of police officers. There appears to be a significant gap in the literature relating to how the groundbreaking events of 2020, including nationwide riots to defund police initiatives, affect the mental health and well-being of police officers. This study consisted of five face-to-face interviews with active police officers. Interview results show that hate rhetoric and defunding police initiatives significantly exacerbate mental health issues and other behaviors and habits detrimental to one’s well-being. These issues include PTSD, depression, and self-destructive behavior, such as excessive alcohol use, bad eating habits, and domestic issues, all of which police officers are already prone to. Overall, this research also addresses police officers’ perceptions regarding the current affairs between the police and the public and how it affects them personally.
