Female Athletes: Body Image Over Athletic Accomplishment in Sports Illustrated

Abstract:

Utilizing historical analysis and ethnomethodological views, I present the analysis of the representation of women in Sports Illustrated magazines. I argue that female athletes have experienced decreasing coverage over the course of many years, and this limited presentation highlights their bodies and lives outside of sports more than their actual athletic accomplishments. Only 43% of stories were stories regarding female athletes as opposed to an 87% that covered male athletes (Kenix, 18). Sports Illustrated swimwear issues focus solely on the stereotypes of female bodies, ultimately contrasting with the way male athletes are covered in the same magazines: as actual high-performing athletes.
