Music’s Attack on the Mental Health Stigma

Abstract:

This paper explores the relation between music and mental health, explaining how musicians can use storytelling in their songs to shed light on mental health issues. Ultimately, the use of narrative in songs could help to spread awareness and reduce stigmas surrounding mental wellness. Millions around the world suffer from at least one form of mental illness, so understanding how storytelling can be incorporated into music can help to heal and bring affirmation in communities. This idea is supported by statistics, dissection of song lyrics, and through the narratives of others. Artists have the ability to use their platform to share their own stories, which lets others know they aren’t alone in their struggles. By integrating narrative in songs, the stigma is attacked head on, fundamentally spreading mental health awareness.
